Imports of Cucumbers and Tomatoes Tend to Grow
Despite the development of new hothouse technologies, our country is increasing the import of cucumbers and tomatoes, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports with reference to Association “Greenhouses of Russia”. While in 2016 the import of tomatoes amounted to 464 thousand tons and the import of cucumbers – 116 thousand tons, last year these figures increased to 577 and 123 thousand tons, respectively.
According to the President of the Association Aleksey Sitnikov, the construction of greenhouse facilities stops. Last year, the reimbursement of capital outlay for the construction of new greenhouses from the budget was reduced from 20 to 10 percent, and this year there is no reimbursement at all. The only measure of support that remained is soft loans, which were extended from 8 to 12 years.
At the same time, as it is noted, due to measures of state support, Russia has practically satisfied the internal need for cucumbers and almost did the same in respect of tomatoes. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, farmers have gathered about 967 thousand tons of vegetables under glass for nine months of this year (spring unheated greenhouses are also taken into account). Of this amount, 897 thousand tons of vegetables were gathered in winter greenhouses, which is 13.5 percent higher than last year. In addition, it is worth reminding that the demand for lentil and semolina is growing on the Russian market.
