Report Has Named the Fastest Growing Segment of Fruit Imports
Last year, Russia imported a record 80 thousand tonnes of plums, reports EastFruit, citing official statistics. Therefore, plum imports have exceeded the import volume even of such popular fruits as cherries or apricots.
Compared to the year before last, Russian import of plums has risen by four percent, while its five-year growth has amounted to 74 percent. In other words, it has become the fastest growing segment of fruit imports in Russia. It was noted that usually plums rank the third in terms of consumption and are absent from the shelves of many retail stores in Russia. Nevertheless, it seems that this fruit is becoming increasingly popular among Russian consumers.
Another fact worth noting is that, according to the source, last year Russia became the world’s largest importer of plums in physical terms, overtaking Iraq, Hong Kong, China, Germany and the UK. At the same time, the Russian Federation remains outside the top five in terms of import value, as the country can import plums relatively cheaply.
Russia’s largest suppliers of plums include Uzbekistan and Moldova. Additionally, the fruit is also shipped in from Turkey, Chile, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Serbia, South Africa and China. It was reported earlier, that African countries are expanding their supply of cocoa beans to Russia.
