Russia to Maintain World Leadership In Apple Imports
In the 2019/2020 agricultural season, the Russian Federation will remain the world’s largest importer of apples, as follows from yet another forecast report by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. According to FAS USDA, our country will purchase 710,000 tonnes of apples abroad, which is almost 80,000 tonnes less than last season.
The gross harvest of apples on all Russian farms this year is estimated at 1.7 million tonnes, which is 100,000 tonnes more than last year. This year will be the second consecutive record-breaking year by harvest, as new orchards are entering the fruiting stage and, at the same time, the yield of this fruit is constantly increasing.
It should be noted that in the EU, apple production is projected to decrease by about 25 percent due to bad weather conditions (especially in Poland). In such an event, exports of these products from EU countries will decrease by about 200,000 tonnes, reaching 975,000 tonnes (the lowest figure since the 2007/2008 season), while about half a million tonnes of apples will be imported.
FAS USDA estimates the total volume of world apple imports at a little less than six million tonnes, which is about 210,000 tonnes more than last season. Earlier, it was reported that, despite the development of new greenhouse technologies, Russia has been increasing imports of cucumbers and tomatoes.
