Russian Engineering Plant Launched in South Africa

The Transmashholding Press Service reports that a subsidiary of the Russian company has launched operations in Boksburg, in the vicinity of Johannesburg, under the name of TMH Africa. This is the first plant of the largest Russian manufacturer of rolling stock and components for railways and urban transport systems in the Republic of South Africa and on the African continent as a whole.

As noted, the plant in Boksburg will perform assembly, maintenance, and upgrading of rolling stock for various purposes. The plant is expected to serve customers not only in South Africa, but also in other countries on the African continent.

Transmashholding completed the acquisition of the DCD Rolling Stock machine engineering plant with an area of 45,000 square metres last autumn. TMH Africa is 70 per cent owned by TMH International AG, the international division of Transmashholding, and 30 per cent of its shares were transferred to the MJISA investment fund, a member of a programme to increase the participation of the black population in the South African economy.

As previously reported, the supply of industrial goods to African countries could be one of the drivers for the development of certain non-resource-based sectors of the Russian economy. In particular, this refers to industries, such as the production of railway, agro-industrial and transport equipment, agricultural products, and medical, radio, and digital technologies and solutions. In addition, manufacturers expect to supply mining equipment to South Africa.
