Sales of Foreign Alcoholic Beverages Growing in the Russian Market
According to retail.ru, citing data provided by the Nielsen analytical company, alcohol was the only growing macro-industry on the Russian FMCG market last year, both in monetary and quantitative terms. Alcohol sales grew by 2 percent in physical and 4.2 percent in monetary terms.
According to the study, in 2019, all types of alcohol saw an increase, with the exception of vodka sales, which stagnate at minus 1.7 percent in physical terms and stay approximately at zero in monetary terms. Gin, whiskey and tequila kept growing in popularity among Russian consumers. In monetary terms, gin sales increased by a record-breaking 26 percent, while whiskey grew by 15.8 and tequila by 9.4 percent.
Smaller formats with volumes below 0.5 litres have an especially high demand. The growth rates of this segment are significantly higher than the alcohol market’s average (13.2 percent in quantitative and 14.4 in monetary terms). Increasing range of products is a key factor in the development of the Russian alcohol market. The reason for this is the fact that consumers are becoming pickier and are actively trying new types of alcohol that they have not tried before. Earlier, it was also reported that experts have predicted a rise in food product prices in Russia.
